This pen was handcrafted from wood removed during the restoration of the Yorktown's flight deck. This historic aircraft carrier serviced from 1943 to 1970. CV-10 was named in honor of CV-5, which was lost at the Battle of Midway in June of 1942.
The Yorktown saw extensive acton in the Pacific during WWII including combat at Tarawa, Marshall Islands, Iwo Jima and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. She also saw action off Luzon, Formosa, Okinawa and many other valuable Japanese targets, including Tokyo.
During the 1960's the Yorktown served in the Vietnam War. In 1967, she served as a platform for the filming of "Tora! Tora! Tora!" In December, she was one of the recovery ships for the Apollo 8 Mission.
On June 27, 1970, she was decommissioned and in 1974, the Navy donated her to the Patriot's Point Development Authority. On the 200th anniversary of the Navy, Oct. 13, 1975, she was formally dedicated as a memorial. The USS Yorktown continues to serve America as the National Memorial to Carrier Aviation at Patriot's Point, Charleston, S. Carolina.
